Geneseo is committed to collecting, handling, storing and using sensitive information properly and securely. Maintaining a focus on information security is important, and the Information Security Program Team provides a framework for comprehensive stewardship and oversight of sensitive information to meet the requirements of law as well as state policy on information security.

Security Tips

  1. Make your passwords long, complex, and difficult to guess.
  2. Check the privacy settings on social networking sites. Know who you're sharing your information with.
  3. Use a password manager.
  4. Connect securely: Random wi-fi hotspots can steal your information. On campus, use eduroam.
  5. Don't take the bait. Do not open attachments or click on links from untrusted sources. Never send personal information in an email.
  6. Configure mobile devices to lock the screen automatically after a brief period of inactivity. Use passcodes.
  7. Think your Google account has been affected by a phishing email?  Run a google Security Checkup to review your Google settings.

Phishing and Malicious Email

Think before you click! Quick tips:

  1. Recognize
    • Verify the sender is who you think it is.
    • How: In Gmail, hover without clicking the sender's name a the top of the email to view the real email address.
  2. Rethink
    • If you can't verify the sender, do not click at all.
    • How: If the email refers to a known website, type that website address into a new browser window instead and check for information there.
  3. Report
    • Suspect it's a phish? Send the alert.
    • How: Reporting the email as phishing within Gmail. (Alternatively: forward the suspect phish or malicious email to helpdesk@geneseo.edu).
